Foundations of Form & Value: A Classical Black & White Still Life

Foundations of Form & Value
Black & White Still Life Workshop
Thursday
Color is wonderful—but value is what makes a painting work.

In this longer-format workshop, we’ll focus on painting a classical black and white still life designed to strengthen the most important foundational skills in painting: understanding light, shadow, form, and edges. By removing color from the equation, you’ll train your eye to truly see what’s happening in a scene instead of guessing.

We’ll work through:

How light travels across objects

Where shadows belong—and just as importantly, where they don’t

The difference between form shadows and cast shadows

How edges soften or sharpen depending on light and distance

How simple objects (spheres, cubes, cones) teach you skills that apply to landscapes, portraits, animals, and everything else you paint

If you’ve ever wondered:

Why does my painting feel flat?

Why don’t my objects feel solid?

Why do my shadows look muddy or wrong?

This class is designed to answer those questions.

By working with basic objects and a controlled lighting setup, you’ll gain clarity and confidence that carries directly into color painting later. This is an essential step in a painter’s growth—and one that often gets skipped.

Whether you’re newer to painting or looking to strengthen your fundamentals, this class will give you tools you’ll use for the rest of your painting journey.

This class is intentionally built to be repeatable. While the core elements stay the same, the techniques and approaches will change from session to session. Along the way, you’ll learn brush techniques, color blending, and layering methods that become stronger and more natural with repetition. Each class wraps up with guidance on finishing touches — including how to confidently sign your painting.

Whether this is your first time picking up a brush or you’re returning to reinforce the basics, this class helps build a solid foundation that makes future paintings easier, more controlled, and more enjoyable.

You’ll be guided through the entire process from start to finish, with plenty of one-on-one instruction along the way. Whether you’re refining your wet-on-wet skills or looking to strengthen your confidence with structure and softness, this class offers the time and space to really learn.

Mastering Value and Depth: A Black and White Painting Study

Black-and-white value study of a sea turtle, demonstrating depth, form, and realism without the use of color in a painting study by Hope Blakely.
Sunday
Sunday, March 15 | 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Color is often the first thing we reach for when painting — but true depth, realism, and visual impact all begin with value.

This full-day workshop is designed as a black-and-white value study, focusing on how light, shadow, and contrast create form and depth before color ever enters the process. By removing color from the equation entirely, we train our eyes to see what actually makes a painting work.

Many artists practice value studies using simple shapes like spheres, cylinders, and cubes — and while that method is incredibly effective (and something we explore in other classes, including the February 19th value study), it doesn’t always appeal to everyone. This workshop offers a different approach.

Instead of still-life shapes, we’ll apply those same value principles to a recognizable, organic subject — a sea turtle. The goal isn’t the turtle itself; it’s learning how to translate light, form, texture, and depth into a finished painting using only black, white, and grayscale tones. For students who struggle to connect with abstract exercises, this provides a more engaging and approachable way to understand value without losing the discipline of the study.

Throughout the day, we’ll focus on:

Seeing and controlling light vs. shadow

Creating depth without relying on color

Understanding how value shapes form and realism

Using contrast to guide the viewer’s eye

Strengthening fundamentals that apply to every style of painting

Students will leave class with a completed black-and-white painting that stands beautifully on its own, as well as a stronger understanding of how value affects every future painting — whether realistic, impressionistic, or somewhere in between.

This workshop runs from 10:00 a.m. to approximately 5:00 p.m., with a lunch break built in to allow layers to dry. All supplies are included, and students will work on a provided canvas. Those wishing to work on a different size may do so with advance notice.

This class is ideal for:

Painters who feel their work lacks depth or realism

Students who rely heavily on color and want to strengthen fundamentals

Artists looking for a more engaging alternative to traditional still-life value studies

No matter what subjects you prefer to paint, mastering value will improve them all.

Going to Georgia!

Travel Dates
Over the years, I’ve had so many people ask where I’m heading next — who I’m learning from, where I’m painting, or which workshops I’m attending or helping with. I thought it would be helpful to start sharing more of that here, both to answer those questions and to let others know about opportunities they may want to explore as well.

This three-day workshop in March focuses on advanced seascape painting, working on a 24 × 36 inch canvas and diving deeper into the technical side of painting water, movement, light, and atmosphere. These are the kinds of immersive learning experiences I seek out to continue growing as an artist and instructor.

Please note: this particular workshop is currently full, though there is a possibility that additional dates may open. Some workshops fill quickly, while others may still have availability. Whenever possible, I’ll include sign-up links or contact information so you can check directly with the instructor.

If you’re interested in future dates or similar workshops with Pat, I recommend getting on her email list and reaching out directly:
📧 patapplingartist@gmail.com

I’ll continue to update this section as I travel, learn, and paint — just in case you’d like to follow along, or even join me on one of these creative adventures.

Joy of Painting in Logan

Saturday
This full-day painting workshop will be taught by Hope Blakely, featuring a beloved portrait design from Mary Carole Larson’s Hildi Santa series.

This is a start-to-finish project and a more focused, goal-oriented class than a typical social paint day. We’ll be working steadily, with intention, to complete the painting by the end of the session. While the atmosphere will still be friendly and encouraging, students should come prepared to stay engaged and keep moving forward throughout the day.

The Santa design includes beautiful, whimsical bubbles, which are a major highlight of this piece. Each student will be able to personalize the bubbles—whether that means family members, grandchildren, meaningful trips, memories, or symbols that matter to you. You’ll be guided on how to plan, mark, and paint each bubble so it feels intentional and cohesive within the composition.

Yes — this class involves painting a person. The good news? It’s Santa. He doesn’t have to look like your husband, your uncle, or anyone in particular. You’ll learn approachable techniques for handling facial structure, values, and expression without the pressure of creating a true portrait likeness.

🕙 Class Schedule:
The class will begin at 10:00 AM and will run until approximately 5:00 PM, making this one of our longer, more immersive workshops.

🍕 Lunch Options:
Students may bring their own lunch, or take advantage of a local pizza restaurant in town. You’ll have the option to order ahead or step out to eat, and the museum will assist with coordinating lunch logistics.

This workshop is ideal for painters who want to challenge themselves, stay focused, and walk away with a fully completed, meaningful holiday painting that can be enjoyed for years to come.

MaryCarole Larson Workshops

Oct 19 - 23 and 26 -30, 2026

From October 19–31, I’ll be heading to San Luis Obispo, California to attend a series of advanced painting workshops with master portrait painter Mary Carole Larson. These sessions are often affectionately referred to as paint camp — intense, focused days built around learning, refining skills, and truly digging into the craft of painting at a higher level.

The workshops are designed for artists who want to challenge themselves, learn from a seasoned instructor, and gain insight into advanced techniques used by a master portrait painter. It’s the kind of environment where you’re painting, observing, asking questions, and absorbing knowledge from morning to night — demanding, inspiring, and incredibly rewarding.

At the moment, there are spots still available, but these workshops are limited in size and tend to fill very quickly. If this is something that speaks to you, I always encourage reaching out and checking — even when space is tight, it never hurts to try. I’ll be sharing Mary Carole’s information on this page so anyone interested can look into the opportunity further.

I first met Mary Carole in Georgia, and I’ll be seeing her again there later in November as well, but this California experience is a special chance to learn in an immersive setting and dedicate real time to growth. Trips like this are a reminder of how valuable it is to step outside your routine, learn directly from those who have mastered their craft, and return home with a deeper understanding of painting.
